This book was recommended to me by a good friend of mine, and she has great taste, so I put myself on the list to get it from the library. I doubt I would have picked it up on my own, but I am glad I did! This Scooby-Doo inspired mystery is smart, creepy, and hilarious. Unlike the old TV show, it is decidedly not for F#$%ing children.

I loved the bizarre word choices and descriptions. It was thorough and original and delightfully anthropomorphizing. Which I love. Tell me the house was sad, tell me the the character’s hair sighed, I for one, will buy it entirely and feel more immersed. I know this isn’t the case for everyone, but I thought it was incredibly fun. Especially since this is ostensibly a horror/mystery book, it gave it an extra little spooky edge. Are the walls watching you?

The characters in this book were a blast, too. Andy, Nate, Kerri, and Kerri’s weimaraner Tim are incredibly fun to follow. As per my usual in life, it made me want a dog.  Tim’s characterization is amazingly human-like, which shouldn’t be too surprising considering Scooby-Doo as the inspiration.

You know what wasn’t fun to follow? The spontaneous switches between traditional prose and theater-style script writing.

*Not Actual Dialogue*

Kerri: I don’t think we should be doing this (Kerri’s hair agrees)

Andy: I don’t want to do it but we f***** have to (She takes Kerri’s hand, then drops it. Her hand is sad about this).

And then we’d go right back into normal paragraphs. Um? I do not know what this added, and it was especially odd to listen to on the audio-book.

Despite that weirdness, the mystery was fun. I don’t read a lot of this genre, so it’s possible that someone else would have solved this right away. Actually I kind of like being willfully ignorant with these things, I think it’s more fun. Anyway, I was surprised several times in the last few chapters.

If you think Scooby-Doo Meet Cthulu sounds like a good time, this irreverent, dark comedy is for you!
